You Spy

People often stand silently at an art opening, brows furrowed in concentration before the fruits of the artist's labor. But at the 7-to-9-p.m. opening of Matt Kindt's show Dead Drop on Friday, June 16, at Subterranean Books (6275 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-862-6100 or www.subbooks.com), the furrows may be deeper than ever. Taking its name from the spy lingo for a public place where purloined items are secretly stashed (say, a bus-station locker), Dead Drop does indeed have various secret elements tucked away throughout the store. So, you can see Kindt's work on the walls, but if you're paying attention to the visible art, you can unlock clues to where the rest of the show is hidden. Put on your best spy gear, and join in the hunt — you may discover that sleuthing is your second nature. And if you're not a natural, don't worry; the show remains up through Sunday, July 16, which means you have plenty of time to solve the mystery.
