On Thursday, June 22, at the Summerfest in Olivette, thrill-seekers can purchase a $12 "ride-all-you-want" armband. But beware: Ms. Day did this once at another ridefest, and she, most unfortunately, chose the craziest "amusement" to go on first. This thing was like the Octopus on acid it had several arms that spun around the main axis, and from these arms several smaller tributaries branched out and whirled about, and on the end of one of these turning secondary arms is where Ms. Day's twirling pod sat. Whoo boy, was that one a doozy! As soon as she opened her eyes mid-ride, she knew that even the big yellow slide was going to be too much to take, and after she disembarked the monstrosity, Ms. Day had to sit under the tent, head between her knees, while everyone else had a fabulous time. So learn from this tale of woozy woe! At Summerfest start with easy carnivalinalia like the Scrambler (or whatever it's called these days), and work your way up to the Whirling, Spinning, Topsy-Turvy Swing-a-ma-jig. That way if you feel, ahem, under the weather post-crazy-ride, you'll have gotten your armband money's worth beforehand.
The Summerfest runs Thursday through Sunday (June 22 through 25) in Stacy Park (9750 Old Bonhomme Road), and the carnival not only features rides, but also free music nightly at 7 p.m., food and games. For more information visit www.olivettemo.com; Summerfest hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday, 5 to 11 p.m. Friday, 3 to 11 p.m. Saturday and 3 to 10 p.m. Sunday ("ride-all-you-want" armbands can also be purchased from 3 to 8 p.m. on Sunday).
