The Chosen Films
The annual St. Louis Jewish Film Festival began on Sunday, June 25, at 4 p.m. with the St. Louis premiere of the comedy Checking Out ($14). If you missed the opening night, no worries: The fest continues daily through Thursday, June 29. Four to five films screen every day (except Sunday) at the Plaza Frontenac Cinema (210 Plaza Frontenac, 1701 South Lindbergh Boulevard, Frontenac), and tickets for each film cost $10. The Danish Solution: The Rescue of the Jews of Denmark (in Danish with English subtitles) screens at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, along with Desperate Hours (in Turkish with English subtitles) — both Holocaust accounts from different countries. Undying Love, a documentary that features the stories of couples who survived concentration camps together, is shown at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27.
The film fest also showcases several films that delve into topics other than the Holocaust, such as Paper Snow (screening at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, June 26), which chronicles the tumultuous love affair between Russian poet Alexander Penn and actress Hanna Rovina in Tel Aviv in the 1930s, and Boynton Beach Club, a romantic comedy set in modern-day Florida (showing at 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 29).
