Though founding vocalist and primary songwriter Ronnie Van Zant long ago went to that "Sweet Home Alabama" in the sky — he perished in the infamous 1977 Mississippi plane crash that killed five other people — Jacksonville, Florida's Lynyrd Skynyrd remain the undisputed kings of classic-rock radio. In fact, Ronnie's brother Johnny has been at the helm since 1987, ensuring that the 2006 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees still maintain their Southern-fried, blues-infused swagger in both sound and attitude. Just look at their ever-growing legacy, which currently influences Drive-By Truckers, Kings of Leon and opening act Shooter Jennings. Whoo, "Free Bird!"
