The comparatively unknown mewithoutYou walked away with mtvU's 2005 Left Field Woodie Award, which is given to the year's most original artist and in the process beat out critical dahlings Saul Williams, Matisyahu, M.I.A. and Arcade Fire. Was it the Philadelphia quintet's crushing post-hardcore guitar riffage that sealed the deal? The fuzzed-out, spoken-word verses that erupt into anguished, shrieking choruses? Or such ambi-God-uous lyrics as "I was dead, then alive/She was like wine turned to water and turned back to wine?" Either way, expect this show to feature a sneak preview of selections from the band's as-yet-untitled third album, due in September from Tooth & Nail Records.
