The title of Eisenbraun & the Geiger Counter's debut should be more like three radio singles and a murder ballad although Ballad's experimentation is often suffocated by muddled music and an aversion to melodic experimentation. Take the potential single "I Love You but Not Me," which has an infectious chorus but sounds dissonant owing to an abundance of instruments. Or Eisenbraun's voice, which is bright and resonant but often sounds strained due to his falsetto yodels. Yet despite the album's overall monotony, "I'm Not My Best Friend's Best Friend" resembles Wheatus (and finally excels in instrumental layering), while the murder ballad, "Last December," has Eagles-like classic-rock style and earnest lyrics. And when Eisenbraun does swap yodels for yells, his rock-star potential is evident; witness the clever lyrics on "The Librarian Song." E&TGC have the potential to be great, but in the future they should evenly distribute their energy between experimentation and construction.
