For Jimbo Mathus, roots, chops and knowledge are the necessary preconditions for old-time music, the kind his band the Squirrel Nut Zippers made cool (perhaps too cool) in the mid '90s. After SNZ disintegrated in legal and marital chaos, Mathus returned to his native northern Mississippi, built a vintage studio, produced and toured with Buddy Guy, and sank deeper and deeper into the primordial ooze of American music — all the gospel, jazz and country commingling before genre labels. On this year's Old Scool Hot Wings, he sounds drenched to the bone in that blues soup and born again in a sweaty Southern ritual with one hell of juke-joint party afterwards.
