The Command of the Cacti

Just like Ms. Day has found something of an anthem in Kelis' "Bossy," she imagines the cacti can relate to this song as well. After all, these prickly plants command respect with their mere presence, and they surely don't let anyone push them around (at least not without a painful punishment). Yep, cacti definitely seem like the bosses of plantkind — and maybe even humankind. See what's going on in the all-powerful cacti community during the Henry Shaw Cactus Society Show & Sale, happening at the Missouri Botanical Garden (4344 Shaw Boulevard; 314-577-9400 or www.mobot.org). This display puts many varieties of cacti out for all to see and admire — and take home. (Ms. Day isn't sure, but she thinks that the people who attend this event may be required to purchase a demanding — erm, she means charming — bristly buddy, as per the recently passed Cacti Decree #1587; defy the cacti law at your own risk.) The show opens at noon on Saturday, July 15, and continues daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sunday, July 23; admission is free, unlike your will.
