Taiwan On, Japanese-Style

Once the Far East was exotic and mysterious, but today, we're all familiar with the joys of Taiwanese bubble tea and traditional Japanese sushi. Likewise, Western culture has left its mark on these nations — basketball and baseball are extremely popular in Taiwan, and Japanese youth are notorious for readily absorbing American fashions and pop culture. Intertwined: St. Louis/Japan/Taiwan-An Overseas Cultural Exchange Exhibition, an art show curated by Sheow Chang for the Regional Arts Commission (6128 Delmar Boulevard), celebrates these connections. On display are works from artists who combine both Eastern and Western outlooks, and who meld traditional and contemporary styles. Everything from video art to Chinese brush painting to leather work (such as Zinnia Su-Jao Hsu's Chi Yang, pictured) are part of the exhibit. The opening reception is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. this evening, and the show continues through Sunday, October 1. For more information call 314-863-5811 or check out www.stlrac.com.
