GemsTruly outrageousBy Alison SieloffPublished on August 16, 2006At your basic rock show, you can expect to see stones and such from right here on Earth. Bo-or-ring! Fortunately, the Greater St. Louis Association of Earth Science Clubs Inc. (636-462-4423 or www.stlearthsci.org) hosts a much more exciting kind of rock expo from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday (August 19 and 20). The 2006 Gem, Mineral & Fossil Show highlights your average gems, minerals and fossils (obviously), but the real star of this event, so to speak, is a moon rock from the Apollo 15 mission, which is on loan from NASA! Now, that's earth-shattering! Of course, this special space rock isn't for sale, but many dealers will be on hand throughout the two-day rock extravaganza selling all manner of fossils, jewelry and more. The show is held at the St. Charles Convention Center (1001 Veterans Memorial Parkway, St. Charles), and admission costs $2 to $5. Oh, and don't even think about trying to "collect" that moon rock it will be closely guarded the whole time (you've heard of the Man in the Moon, right?).
