He Did Want a Revolution
George Washington faced many hardships during the Revolutionary War — the low morale, the numerically superior forces of the enemy, that frigid Valley Forge winter — but George was a professional soldier, and he knew what he was up against. Joseph Plumb Martin enlisted in 1776 as a teen and spent the next eight years fighting, and he had no generalship, no sense of how many of the enemy there were, or even a powdered wig to keep him warm. Barnes M. Bradshaw portrays Martin in a free, first-person, living-history performance today at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the Missouri History Museum (Lindell Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue; 314-746-4599 or www.mohistory.org) as part of Ben Franklin's War.
