Catharina van Eetvelde addresses ideas of cross-fertilization in her animated work Cruise. Fittingly, Cruise itself is a product of cross-fertilization; van Eetvelde's animated drawings blend with the words of poet Abigail Lang to form a meditation on the meanings, both literal and figurative, of land and sea. As a voice intones oceanographic terms, van Eetvelde's enchanting cartoon-like drawings of nautical maps, images of her native Belgium and icons of Italian painters flow and dissolve across the screen. Cruise is the seventh installation of the New Media Series at the Saint Louis Art Museum in Forest Park (314-721-0072 or www.slam.org), and it officially opens today; van Eetvelde's work is on display in Gallery 301 through Thursday, November 30.
