Hey, Looky Here

Kristopher Pollard is a St. Louis native currently living and working in Milwaukee, "the city of the future." He makes especially charming drawings of the pen-and-ink variety that usually feature a blocky, stylized human figure (or, in at least one case, an anatomically perfect Grendel inspired by John Gardner's novel of the same name) surrounded by a few words. Powerful in their composition, stark in their wryness, Pollard's drawings have a peculiar sense of humor that comes not from the text or the image, but from the wholeness of the two. Mathematically speaking, Pollard's work is somewhat like a Venn diagram, illustrating the commonality of two distinct ideas. What those two ideas are, well, who knows? Pollard is a slippery fish, a touch coy, a trifle brash. It all comes through in the cumulative viewing of his work, which is on display in the show Hey, Look at Me: Drawings by Kristopher Pollard, currently occupying the upstairs gallery of Subterranean Books (6275 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-862-6100) through Sunday, September 24.
