June

5 p.m. Saturday, September 2. Creepy Crawl (3524 Washington Boulevard).

The general consensus about the current crop of emo bands is that they bleed together into an indistinguishable muddle of nasally vocals and layered guitars. But the Chicago quartet June sticks out from the crowd, thanks to Mark Sutor's percussive experimentation; his rhythms and time signatures are blissfully erratic, ensuring unpredictable pacing that keeps even the snobbiest emo-philes on their toes. Singer Tim Brennan's vocals are a cross between those of Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba and the Get Up Kids' Matt Pryor, while back-up vocalist A.J. Brown complements with a third-dimensional mezzo-tenor. And although June shows its fair share of density, the band also displays power-pop chops that echo its appetite for exploration.
