The Howling Hex is Neil Michael Hagerty, an experimental guitarist — and an experimental guitarist isn't supposed to groove like the Howling Hex. But with overtures toward polyrhythmic Talking Heads and disfigured Captain Beefheart improvs, the Hex's newest Drag City release, Nightclub Version of the Eternal, nearly realizes the former Pussy Galore and Royal Trux guitarist's vision of dividing mind-fuck with butt-bump and coming up with more than just anti-rock jams. Hagerty's duet partner, Lynn Madison, draws a slant line through whatever melodies survive the cross-chatter of hand-drum, baritone guitar bass and blues deconstruction, but don't be perplexed: They'll make you move; you just won't be able to predict how.
