The Power of One

An artist's first solo exhibition is something special, something you should be a part of, so head to Webster University's Cecille R. Hunt Gallery (8342 Big Bend Boulevard; 314-968-7171) for Spectacle of Power: New Work by Artist Jay Lizo, which is this LA-based painter/sculptor's premiere non-group show. By incorporating popular phrases and other text into his works, Lizo taps into the culture seen in films (like Fight Club) and heard in rap music (by the Wu-Tang Clan, for example). In Untitled (pictured), the colorful, bubbly-shape letters forming the phrase "yeah right" also harken back to the graffiti explosion that happened years ago.

Speaking of the past, Spectacle of Power opened on Friday, September 1, but it remains on view through Friday, September 29; the gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 1 to 4 p.m. on the weekends.
Sept. 1-29
