Every year the American Library Association puts out a list of books frequently challenged or threatened with "library bans" on the grounds of perceived indecency. The usual suspects (Catcher in the Rye, Judy Blume's Forever) make the list, but Mr. Night was shocked, shocked, to see that Dav Pilkey's children's-book series, Captain Underpants, made the top ten for 2005. Mr. Night's nephew, Li'l Sir Twilight, loves and reads Pilkey's work with gusto, as does Mr. Night. If you believe that juvenile humor is OK for juveniles, adult language is OK for adults, and books about sex education should contain diagrams and facts about sex, then you support the ACLU's Banned Book Week. At 7 p.m. at Left Bank Books (399 North Euclid Avenue; 314-367-6731 or www.left-bank.com), volunteers read aloud from these threatened books in defense of all readers' rights. Admission is free, but a percentage of any new-book purchase at Left Bank goes to the ACLU's campaign. Li'l Sir Twilight, Mr. Night and Captain Underpants all say "thank you."
