Painting and Sculpture Meet

And get along quite nicely

For many artists paintings are paintings, and these works fit on a certain right-angled canvas; likewise, for this same contingent, sculptures are stand-alone three-dimensional objects — no questions asked, no variation. And then you have James M. Smith: He thinks outside the boxy stretched canvas and creates three-dimensional pieces with that very same cloth. These works are drenched in rich color and have a raw fluidity to them despite their careful construction. See Smith's "fabric structures" for yourself at his show at Fontbonne University's Gallery of Art (Fine Arts Building, 6800 Wydown Boulevard; 314-889-1431). This exhibit's reception is held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, September 15, and Smith's work remains on view every day but Sunday through Friday, October 6.
Mondays-Saturdays. Starts: Sept. 12. Continues through Oct. 6
