Tricks Are for Everyone

The game "skate" has rules similar to the basketball game "horse" — except in "skate," players try to one-up each other with skateboard tricks instead of difficult shots. The strategy is the same (always open with a tough trick and save something even tougher for later rounds), but the penalties in "skate" are a little higher. If you miss a hook-shot in "horse," you're embarrassed; miss a bigspin, and you could break an ankle. But who dares wins, so go as big as you dare at The Big Game of Skate today at the relatively new South City Family YMCA Skate Park (3150 Sublette Avenue; 314-644-3100 or www.ymcastlouis.org). There are two divisions (fourteen and younger and fifteen and older), and sign-ups start at 11 a.m. ($3 to participate, but free for skate-park members).
