Moneen

7 p.m. Thursday, November 2. Creepy Crawl (3524 Washington Boulevard).

While Moneen's early material didn't do much to distinguish it from the typical mall-punk fare, the Canadian group's new full-length, The Red Tree, shows the band channeling their inner Muse and creating something artful and ambitious. In fact, songs like "If Tragedy's Appealing, Then Disaster's an Addiction" are accessible enough for fans of Brand New, but with intricate guitar lines and layered sonic textures, they're also dynamic enough for guys who hang out at Guitar Center way too much. "I'm not a failure now," frontman Kenny Bridges cries on the aforementioned song, in what may be the understatement of the year. If you want to see what happens when Pink Floyd meets punk rock (but without the self-indulgent excess), Moneen could be just what you're searching for, eh?
