Murder by Death / The Hush Sound

7 p.m. Saturday, November 4. Creepy Crawl (3524 Washington Boulevard).

The coupling of Murder By Death and the Hush Sound is a double-bill made in exploratory-indie-rock heaven. The former create a buoyant mish-mash of ominous shanty rock and weeping cello, while their vocalist, Adam Turla, has garnered comparisons to Johnny Cash. But as an ensemble, the Indiana quartet reeks of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, owing to a penchant for dark and stormy story-songs that would sound at home on a pirate ship. If Murder by Death is Captain Hook, though, then the Hush Sound is Peter Pan. Guitars are merely a backdrop for this chirpy, cheeky, percussion-driven quartet, which employs a cavalcade of instruments that complement Greta Salpeter's and Bob Morris' dazzling voices. The addition of vaudevillian piano cements the band's reputation as the ideal soundtrack for a circus of indie-pop-happy freaks.
