Pit er Pat

8 p.m. Wednesday, November 8. Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center (3301 Lemp Avenue).

Some of Pit er Pat's key traits suggest a renaissance of rock-based minimalism and faux-jazz wankery: They're a keyboard-bass-drums trio out of Chicago recording for Thrill Jockey Records, the label that launched a thousand vibraphones via Tortoise and the Sea and Cake. When you add Tortoise/Sea and Cake drummer John McEntire to the mix (he produced the recently released Pyramids), the whole thing can seem a little like post-rock fantasy camp. Luckily, Pit er Pat escape such easy pigeonholing; keyboardist Fay Davis-Jeffers sings sometimes haunting, sometimes poignant lyrics with her fey, unassuming voice, while the rhythm section collapses and rebuilds around her.
