Geisha Girl

More than just an important year for St. Louis, 1904 proved to be history-making for opera as well: Giacomo Puccini's Madame Butterfly debuted in Italy that year — even though we were having the World's Fair right here. (Um, yeah, didn't Puccini realize what a big deal that was?) Anyway, now St. Louisans can see the beautiful-yet-heartbreaking work when it's presented at 8 p.m. as part of the Touhill Performing Arts Center's Opera! Opera! series. Performed by national touring company Teatro Lirico d'Europa, the tale of the fifteen-year-old Japanese bride of an absentee American military man is told in Puccini's Italian, with English supertitles provided. So you'll be reading along throughout most of the night, but when the young Cio-Cio-San, or Madame Butterfly, causes her own early demise, your teary eyes will be glued to the stage.

To purchase tickets for Madame Butterfly, which are priced at $26 to $50, call 314-516-4949 or visit www.touhill.org. The performing arts center is located on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road).
