Rocking upstate's ass since 2003: Local band Downstate brings the sort of forthright, unadulterated rock & roll that Wayne and Garth would have featured on their cable-access show. The guitars are heavy and tinged with classic-rock nostalgia, while the rest of the band keeps things present-and post-core. Celebrate the release of their debut CD, Liquor, Lust & Lies, (on Vigilant Records), at the Creepy Crawl (3524 Washington Boulevard; 314-531-3888; www.creepycrawl.com) on Saturday, November 11, at 7 p.m. Also performing will be local favorites Falling from Grace (formerly Loco 88), Runnerup, Fair Enough and Last Words. $8 for 21+, $11 for minors.
Yourmom is a sackbut!Sure, the terms "sackbut" and "hurdy gurdy" could easily moonlight as vintage insults. But for Beat Happenings' purposes, they are European instruments (the former, an antiquated trombone; the latter, a mechanical violin). Lucky for your newly educated self, world-renowned musician Tom Zajac, who specializes in sackbut, hurdy-gurdy, recorder and bagpipes, will play pieces from the Italian Baroque and Renaissance with St. Louis' own Kingsbury Ensemble at 4 p.m. Sunday, November 12, at Trinity Presbyterian Church (6800 Washington Avenue, University City; 314-725-3840). The event is free, but a $10 donation to the Kingsbury Group is encouraged.
