Paintings Inspired

It's gallery season, to be sure, but the vast — as in "increasing exponentially every year" — amount of art in this city can't be contained strictly in the growing number of splendid galleries that dot St. Louis from Cherokee Street to Maplewood and parts beyond. Just ask Barb Flunker, who's shown at several galleries and now has work up at the SqWires Restaurant & Market Annex (1415 South 18th Street) in Lafayette Square. Flunker's pieces are usually big and abstract, and the paint is infused (sometimes) with crushed glass; the work varies from a Rothko-esque soft geometry to a Pollock-y controlled mayhem. Flunker will be at SqWires from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, December 4, and during that time the artist will answer questions, explain her artistic muse (the current exhibition is titled Amsterdam Inspired, and it remains up through Thursday, February 15) and maybe sign autographs. To get a preview of her work, visit homepage.mac.com/barbflunker, and call SqWires at 314-865-3522 for more information.
