Junkanoo and You
Well, friends, the Bahamian celebration Junkanoo comes a few days early this year at the Old Courthouse (11 North Fourth Street). Wait, what's that? You don't know about Junkanoo? Well, good thing the customs of this street festival are explored at noon today during the courthouse's Nineteenth-Century African-American Holiday Traditions program. After your trip to the islands, you'll be brought right back home to learn about the festive happenings at what's now known as the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, and about Mary Robinson, who was once a slave there; this portion of the afternoon program begins at 1 p.m. And at 2 p.m. you'll have the opportunity to learn about the Buffalo Soldiers' way of life on the frontier — if your only information about these brave men is courtesy of Bob Marley, it might be a good time to find out more.
