Long gone are the days of swishy-fringe-clad flappers, lengthy cigarette holders and limited, secret stashes of booze. That's when the really good parties happened! Nowadays, the liquor flows like water — not that there's anything wrong with that — and new bars open as often as Lindsay Lohan takes a drink. However, it's not every day that an actual former speakeasy surfaces and throws wide its formally clandestine door. You have an opportunity to enjoy such a space by way of the recently opened Tuxedo Room's Speakeasy Wine Cave. The Tuxedo's renovators happened upon this area of the building by error and discovered not only lots of ladies' shoes and an old issue of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat dating back to the 1930s, but also a trapdoor and a hidden stairwell. Way cool! So why not enjoy a glass of wine here, and help give life to a place that used to bubble over with the stuff? If you want, you can even pretend you're back in the days when alcohol was forbidden, but times were anything but dry. The Wine Cave is open daily from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m., and the Tuxedo Room is located at 522 North Grand Boulevard. For more information visit www.tuxedoroom.com; to reserve the Wine Cave for dinner, call 314-898-0400.
