Sonny Landreth

9 p.m. Saturday, December 30. Blueberry Hill's Duck Room (6504 Delmar Boulevard, University City).

Hailing from the swamplands of Louisiana, Sonny Landrethis a bayou bluesman like no other. His tone is syrupy and thick, while his finger-picking is so lithe and nonlinear that it breaks the mold of slide-guitar playing. With his high, clear voice and nimble moves, Landreth is the rare blues player who never really sounds blue. His take on "Louisiana 1927," recorded for the Randy Newman tribute, Sail Away, reverberates with so much transcendent hopefulness that it's hard to believe he recorded the track a year before Hurricane Katrina made the song relevant again.
