The Power of the Pen

And pencils and paper, too

The Iraq war is practically the only topic covered on the TV news anymore, and reports about the conflict often leave us feeling helpless and hopeless. Regardless of your political views, one thing is certain: Iraqi children need our compassion and assistance. One small way you can improve their lives is by participating in Operation Help Iraq's Kids (operationhik@hotmail.com or 314-965-1017), happening today at OfficeMax (8404 Eager Road, Brentwood). This school-supply drive was organized by relatives and friends of local servicemen Marine Sergeant Tim Embree and Master Sergeant Russ Avery, who are helping to train an Iraqi army brigade in the war-torn al-Anbar province. When you stop by the store from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to purchase some desperately needed educational necessities for the kids in this violent region (you'll find a list of requested items at the store), you'll also have the opportunity to visit with local celeb McGraw Milhaven from KTRS (550 AM) — he'll be broadcasting his radio show from the OfficeMax. Plus, you'll finally feel like you're doing something to help. Trust us: The kids will thank you.
