We (He)Art This City

In pinpointing the differences between a good city and a great one, a person might consider a metropolitan area's historical significance, renowned cultural institutions and/or number of White Castle restaurants per capita. The oft-quoted writer Samuel Johnson defined a great city as "the school for studying life," and artists from all over our region interpret that theme for the City as Art exhibition at Art Saint Louis (917 Locust Street; 314-241-4810 or www.artstlouis.org). This multimedia show featuring 47 works by 41 artists — including Jennifer Collins, David Lancaster (whose work is pictured) and Anukriti Sud Hittle — was juried by Shannon Fitzgerald and artist Bob Hansman from Washington University. City as Art opens with a free reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, January 20, and remains on view Monday through Saturday until Thursday, March 1. (Unfortunately, our proposed entry of a majestic arch of White Castle cheeseburger boxes stretching gracefully into the sky didn't make the cut.)
