What Have You Done to That Book?!

Put the adjectives "torn," "cut" and "stitched" in front of the word "book," and you'll have librarians everywhere sweating. But the title of M.J. Goerke's retrospective show, Torn, Cut & Stitched, actually refers to the methods by which she makes her books. Goerke could have also thrown in "watercolor," "drawing" and "sculpture," but that would've made for a wordy title indeed. Goerke's books' pages erupt from their bindings and spill forth from a sculpted head, slyly imitating how our brains process books. Torn, Cut & Stitched is on display at the University of Missouri-St. Louis' Gallery FAB (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-6967) from Tuesday, January 16, through Thursday, February 15, with the opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 25.
