Terror

6:30 p.m. Sunday, January 21. Pop's (1403 Mississippi Avenue, Sauget, Illinois).

Terror's Scott Vogel, who sports a Gang Starr tattoo, among many others, yielded vocal duties on a track from his band's 2006 album, Always the Hard Way, to rappers Murs and Mr. Dibbs. Having upheld the hardcore/hip-hop hybrid tradition, which dates back to KRS-One/Sick of It All and Onyx/Biohazard, Terror devoted the rest of the record to its usual uncompromising old-school arsenal. Live, Vogel's intense delivery casts his face's blood vessels into stark relief, and his profanity count rivals Straight Outta Compton. Propelled by Nick Jett's violent backbeats, the Los Angeles band pressure-condenses several verses, group-shouted choruses, dual-guitar riffs and solos into lethal two-minute capsules. The pace slows only for the thunderous breakdowns, which Vogel ushers in with aptly ominous lines such as "Your turn to feel the pain."
