What you remember most about a brilliant author isn't always his work, but his personality. And while you can get Vonnegut's humor by reading him, you'll never know just how drolly cranky he is until you see the wild-haired old man read in person. In the case of William Gass, the protagonist of The Tunnel is a roaring racist, but Gass himself is brilliant, friendly and dedicated to language. Gass reads a new piece, "The Inhumanity Museum" (a section of his forthcoming novel, Middle C), today at noon in room 229 of the J.C. Penney Conference Center on the campus of the University of Missouri-St. Louis (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road). OK, so Gass is not a comedian like Mr. V, but at a reading for his friend and fellow metafiction guru William Gaddis, Gass did say, "Mostly, we'd sit on his porch and drink and wait calmly for the end of the world."
