Krewe Cuttin' a Rug

With its ties to various Christian sects, Mardi Gras has always operated on the duplicity of overindulgence and self-denial; wanton, almost hedonistic, partying always precedes the solemnity of the Lenten season. So where better to start the Mardi Gras celebration than at an actual house of worship? Christ Church Cathedral (1210 Locust Street) hosts the Krewe Mardi Gras Ball, starting at 6 p.m. tonight. In true New Orleans style, there will be a jambalaya dinner and a crowning of the king and queen of the ball. Live music will be performed by the House of Bishops, which is as good a name for a church house band since Pope Linus and the Security Blankets (or Captain Noah and his Two-by-Two Revue). The dress code is casual, though prizes will be awarded for the best Mardi Gras costume (word to the wise: Dressing as a FEMA trailer was so 2006). Tickets are $30; call 314-452-2025 for more information.
Fri., Feb. 9
