Pour Some (Maple) Sugar on Me

The "sugar shack" at Rockwoods Reservation (2751 Glencoe Road, Wildwood; 636-458-2236) is not, as its name suggests, a music bar in a teeny-bopper TV show, nor is it code for a den in the drug trade. But a visitor might be forgiven for confusing it for either, since the sugar shack is where maple sap is boiled down into syrup — creating the same high-octane rush without the bother of loud bands or illegal activity. Today, the sugar shack is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Rockwoods' Maple Sugar Festival. Visitors can watch and learn how to tap a grove of sugar maples to collect the sap, and then visit the shack to watch the culinary equivalent of spinning straw into gold. Dress for the cold at this free event, but don't underestimate the warming powers of fresh maple syrup. Mmmm.
