Water Water Everywhere
As a kid, you learned that science was everywhere — in your pencil, your playground equipment, even contained within your chocolatey Snack Pack. The Saint Louis Science Center (5050 Oakland Avenue; www.slsc.org) confirms this theory — that's science, right? — with its seemingly sometimes-less-than-scientific programming (we loved it, but a Rock Paper Scissors tournament? That "rock" link is tenuous at best). Anyway, this evening the center will follow more of a strict-constructionist idea of science at the Science Cafétalk (6:30 to 9:30 p.m.). During this event Martin Fisher, the CEO and one of the founders of KickStart, shares information about an invention that is helping the poverty-stricken people in Kenya and other countries. His nonprofit organization offers inexpensive products such as the Super MoneyMaker Pressure Pump, a device to help with irrigation, so people no longer have to water crops inefficiently with buckets. Learn about how this pump works — it can even push water uphill! — while you enjoy a beverage and snacks. Admission to the Science Café is $20, and you need to call 314-289-4424 to reserve your spot.
