Dr. Dog / What Made Milwaukee Famous

7 p.m. Thursday, March 8. Creepy Crawl (3524 Washington Boulevard).

Talk about an opening salvo: Dr. Dog starts off its new album, We All Belong, with "Old News," a double shot of piano glissando and disco-funk drums that's bolstered by a baritone sax. This sizable groove announces that the Philly quintet is finally fulfilling the lo-fi promise of earlier recordings. Indeed, Belong was recorded to 24-track, 2-inch tape, which has allowed the band to cram multiple layers of harmonies and walls of guitar into fuzzy pop nuggets — and created superb analog warmth. What Made Milwaukee Famous takes a more mannered, classic approach to pop, crafting a sound that melds Of Montreal's glam-rock, Spoon's beguiling menace and Joe Jackson's new-wave symphonies.
