Gimme Five (from Japan)

Japan and the USA have many things in common: Both have more than their fair share of convenience stores; their kids are addicted to videogames, anime and manga; and a list of the most popular pets would find cats and dogs at the top. But in Japan, you'd also find the rhinoceros beetle, available from vending machines across the country, on that roster. Odds are that one of the Five Friends from Japan has a beetle on a leash. The new interactive exhibit at the Magic House (516 South Kirkwood Road, Kirkwood), Five Friends from Japan brings to light the similarities and differences between Japanese and American culture by allowing you to explore the lives of five typical Japanese kids (Aisa, Yusuke, Sakiko, Shoko and Ken). Kids will learn about (and sample) Japanese cuisine, try their hands at calligraphy and aikido, dress in traditional attire, read some manga, and listen to and create their own music. The exhibit opens Saturday, February 3, and runs through Sunday, May 20 (every day but Monday). Admission to the Magic House is $7.50. For more information call 314-822-8900 or visit www.magichouse.com.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Feb. 3. Continues through May 20
