HUMANWINE

7 p.m. Friday, April 6. Lucas School House (1220 Allen Avenue).

The sign of a good storyteller is the ability to lift listeners out of their own lives and transport them to a new realm. Is that what HUMANWINE's Holly Brewer strives for when she sings enchantingly about a fantasy world called the Vinland? Or are her grotesque tales of a society of mindless "cogs" who toil in factories to appease a totalitarian ruler really an acute discernment of our own realities? The Boston duo employs a vaudeville style reminiscent of an anarchist Dresden Dolls (and in fact enlisted the band's percussionist, Brian Viglione, for the tour), yet punctuates its unusual narratives with mandolins, accordions and trumpets of a gypsy persuasion. While not all audiences may understand HUMANWINE's radical vision, its dark cabaret is one you won't soon forget.
