"Technology, it needs me," sings Parker Gispert of Atlanta trio the Whigs although the converse isn't true. The band's debut, Give 'Em All a Big Fat Lip, isn't purist rock, but it's close. With open Big Star space, the guitars resound and the rhythm section does what a good rhythm section should do: move songs forward, even when the lyrics drag them back to the lovelorn-stoner couch. Sometimes Gispert can't even be bothered to find a good rhyme "If you're on the one-eighteen, I'll find you on the one-eighteen" is (no shit, dude) irrefutable but when his scrunched yelp breaks into a howl and the ample hooks sink in, the band almost lives up to the Rolling Stoneand Fader raves.
