Best of the West

Like the Book of Love, no one is quite sure who wrote the Great American Songbook. Cole Porter? Sammy Kahn? Duke Ellington? While its authorship and contents may be contended, lately it seems that every singer from Boz Scaggs to Queen Latifah thinks he or she can pick up a bulky, vintage microphone and take a stab at “Stardust.” And then there’s cabaret star Paula West, who demonstrates that cabaret is a craft that rewards work, not dabbling. West traipses through a the pages of the Great American Songbook during her five shows this long weekend at Savor (4356 Lindell Boulevard; 314-531-0220). She adds a touch of jazz to cabaret’s clarion elegance, slipping into scat-like phrasing and giving these old standbys a new dimension of smoldering sultriness. West performs on Thursday and Friday at 8:30 p.m., on Saturday at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., and on Sunday at 2 p.m. (April 19 through 22). Tickets are $35 to $40.
April 19-22
