Putting the “We” in “Zimbabwe”
Zimbabwe, a smallish country in the south of Africa, may only be slightly larger than Montana, but its Shona people have much artistic spirit to offer. Celebrate their culture while exploring their sculptural creations, all at the Missouri Botanical Garden (4344 Shaw Boulevard; 314-577-9400 or www.mobot.org) this summer. The outdoor oasis once again hosts works by the Shona in a new exhibit, Chapungu: Nature, Man and Myth, which goes on display Saturday, April 28, on the grounds (one piece is within the Climatron). These substantial-yet-elegant stone works depict people and animals (both real and fantastical), and they look absolutely stunning in the gardens and ponds as visual reminders of the links between humans, creatures and plants -- and the ties that bind our lives and those of the Shona. The exhibition is included with your regular garden admission ($2 to $8), and the garden is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Look for more information next week about Chapungu Nights (similar to Chihuly Nights), which begin Thursday, May 3. Chapungu: Nature, Man and Myth remains on display through Wednesday, October 31.
