Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

8 p.m. Wednesday, May 2. The Pageant (6161 Delmar Boulevard).

The story of the sudden, unlikely success of Brooklyn's Clap Your Hands Say Yeah — a self-released record, blogosphere buzz, Pitchfork kudos, etc., etc — isn't nearly as interesting as lead singer Alec Ounsworth's voice. It warbles. It yodels. It breaks. Love it or hate it, you'll want to give the poor guy a cough drop. Ounsworth's voice gave a distinctive accent to the shimmering, propulsive guitar lines and keyboard melodies on the band's self-titled debut, but amidst the off-kilter arrangements and crowded production of the new Some Loud Thunder, his voice may be the only thing fans find familiar. Still, songs like the lovely, spare "Goodbye to Mother and the Cove" are a reminder that Clap Your Hands Say Yeah isn't about pleasing the crowd or holding to some DIY aesthetic. It's a brave new voice, howling in the cold.
