While best known for its grotesque record covers and graphically vile subject matter, Cannibal Corpse doesn't really capitalize on either element live. The Buffalo band has never flashed autopsy slides or spurted stage blood, and George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher's rapid-fire, grunt-pitched vocals remain impenetrable without a lyric-sheet decoder ring. (In fact, the group's gore obsession surfaces only when Fisher announces song titles such as "Fucked with a Knife.") Without shock-value spectacles to distract from the music, Cannibal Corpse's concerts reveal the naked, relentless brutality of its thrash-infested death-metal tunes. But the quintet's technical proficiency shouldn't be surprising: Cannibal Corpse has sold more than a million records in the past two decades and not all of those consumers were content merely to stare at the mutilated figures on the album artwork.
