Back to the Future
Instead of looking into your crystal ball to see the future, just attend some (or all) of the events during Historic Preservation Week 2007, put on by the Landmarks Association of St. Louis, Inc. So, yeah, this “week” (it actually runs from Friday, May 11, through Sunday, May 20) honors what’s old about St. Louis with a variety of free and inexpensive events, including tours everywhere from Maplewood (May 19) to Old North St. Louis (May 12), concerts (May 16 and 20), a cemetery visit (May 12), film presentations (May 13 and 19) and so much more. But these celebrations also help us know where our city is going. These buildings that we strive to preserve affect the landscape of tomorrow and help shape the culture of the future -- one where our past isn’t forgotten. One very special thing to celebrate on May 12 is the recent designation of the Eugene Field House & St. Louis Toy Museum (634 South Broadway) as a National Historic Landmark, a more rare distinction than being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
