The promotional poster for the Fucking Champs' latest album, VI,features guitarist Tim Green shooting lightning out of his fingertips in the desert while his two bandmates casually look on. To be perfectly honest, that image is as good as any to describe the band's sound. Although the San Francisco act's roots are in punk rock (Green may still be best known as a member of the pioneering post-hardcore group Nation of Ulysses), the power trio's twin nine-string guitar/drum arrangements utilize dual harmonies, Thin Lizzy-esque riffage and blazing guitar solos to create a symphonic amalgam so rich, you'll barely notice that there aren't vocals. If you like your metal with more Iron Maiden than detached irony, meet your new favorite band.
