Jazz in Motion!

In his sleeve notes for Miles DavisKind of Blue, pianist Bill Evans draws an analogy between jazz music and a style of Japanese painting, both of which depend on the artist’s improvisational skills and ability to create lasting expressions within the strictures of the medium. Ten local visual artists have taken inspiration from the improvisational nature of jazz as part of the exhibit Just Jazz: Preserving the Jazz Syncopations of American Culture, which opens Thursday, May 31, at the Gallery at the Regional Arts Commission (6128 Delmar Boulevard). A reception takes place on opening night at 5:30 p.m. and features live jazz from the THF Realty All Star Student Ensemble. Just Jazz runs through Sunday, July 8, and the gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Call 314-863-5811 or visit www.art-stl.com for more information.
