More About
The great shame of Major League Baseball is not steroids or HGH or even Bud Selig. It is that Buck ONeil was never elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. ONeil was one of the great Negro League players -- one of the great players in any league -- and he served as the separate leagues public face for 50 years. He also could have been the conscience of the game, as ONeil loved baseball with a fervor untainted by bitterness or regrets. Joe Posnanski embarked on a summer-long road trip with the charismatic former player and recorded ONeils wit and passion for the game in his book, The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck ONeils America. Posnanski discusses this charmed trip from the final year of ONeils life at 7 p.m. at St. Louis County Library Headquarters (1640 South Lindbergh Boulevard, Frontenac; 314-994-3300 or www.slcl.org). Admission is free, and books will be available for purchase.
