Talkin’ Baseball
The great shame of Major League Baseball is not steroids or HGH or even Bud Selig. It is that Buck O’Neil was never elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. O’Neil was one of the great Negro League players -- one of the great players in any league -- and he served as the separate league’s public face for 50 years. He also could have been the conscience of the game, as O’Neil loved baseball with a fervor untainted by bitterness or regrets. Joe Posnanski embarked on a summer-long road trip with the charismatic former player and recorded O’Neil’s wit and passion for the game in his book, The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O’Neil’s America. Posnanski discusses this charmed trip from the final year of O’Neil’s life at 7 p.m. at St. Louis County Library Headquarters (1640 South Lindbergh Boulevard, Frontenac; 314-994-3300 or www.slcl.org).
