Something Old, Something NewBy Ms. DayPublished on June 13, 2007As a St. Louisan, Ms. Day has been to a tremendous number of weddings -- there must be something in the river water here that encourages the ol’ walk down the aisle. And this isn’t a recent phenomenon, either. For proof, look no further than unCommon Threads: Stories of Missouri Brides, the new exhibit opening Sunday, June 17, at the Missouri History Museum (Lindell Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue; 314-746-4599 or www.mohistory.org). On display are bridal gowns -- some from the early 1800s and others from more modern times -- and many other nuptial accoutrements (including “somethings blue,” gifts and an example of an old-fashioned hope chest). Times may have changed, and the modern-day wedding may only reflect a glimmer of the past in the fourteen-carat diamond ring on the bride’s hand, but Ms. Day has noticed that one thing remains the same: Weddings always showcase a bit of the couple's style and that of the times. See examples of that matrimonial elegance and learn the stories behind these Missouri weddings daily until Sunday, September 9; admission to unCommon Threads is free.
