The Fairest of the Fairs

The Jersey County Fair’s Web site says that people should arrive early to watch the Hambone Express, a.k.a. the piggy race. And since Ms. Day loves these piggies and their piggy faces (so sweet and fuzzy!) and their piggy enthusiasm (so braced for the win!), she plans to get to the fairgrounds on opening day (Saturday, July 7), even though her farmyard friends don’t race until Tuesday, July 10 -- that should be early enough! In the meantime, Day can have a look at the fair’s other offerings, including harness racing at 1 p.m. on opening day and a gospel concert at 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 8. There’s also a beauty pageant, bull-riding, carnival rides and a couple of tractor pulls, and a demolition derby closes out the farm-style festivities on Sunday, July 15 (if you’ve never been to one of these, you have to go -- Ms. Day speaks from experience). Call 618-498-3422 or visit www.jerseycountyfair.com for directions to the fairgrounds (located on Route 67 in Jerseyville, Illinois) and a complete schedule with days, times and prices for special events; admission to the fair itself is free for children twelve and younger and $2 for adults.
